SSC CGL 2026 Photo Format: Exact Dimensions, Background, and File Size Guide

By Sahil Gawade

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) overhauled its registration system with the introduction of the One-Time Registration (OTR) portal in 2023. While the OTR system was designed to simplify registration across multiple SSC exams (CGL, CHSL, CPO, GD Constable, and others), it introduced new photo and signature specifications that many candidates are still unaware of.

This guide is specifically focused on SSC CGL and CHSL 2026 photo upload requirements and the most common mistakes that result in application rejections or document verification failures.

SSC Exam Photo Formatter

Automatically format your photo to SSC OTR portal specifications — 3.5cm × 4.5cm, 20–50KB, white background, JPEG format. Free and private.

Why 20–50KB is Particularly Difficult to Hit

The SSC photo size window is notoriously narrow. 20–50KB is a 30KB window, and most photo tools cannot reliably produce results within this range:

  • Too small tools (targeting 20KB) often produce over-compressed photos with visible JPEG artifacts
  • Standard compressors produce 50–80KB results that are still too large
  • High-quality tools produce 100KB+ results that exceed the limit

The key is using a tool that can target the upper end of the window (around 45–48KB) — giving you maximum image quality while staying safely below the 50KB ceiling.

Our SSC formatter targets 45KB specifically, putting you comfortably within the valid range.

The 5 Mistakes That Get SSC Applications Flagged

Mistake 1: Compressing Too Aggressively

Many candidates use generic free compressors and set the target to "minimum possible" — ending up with a 15KB photo that is below the 20KB minimum. The OTR portal will reject files below 20KB with a "File size too small" error.

Mistake 2: PNG Format

SSC requires JPEG only. Uploading a PNG (even at the right size) will be rejected. If you have a PNG photo, convert it to JPEG first.

Mistake 3: Wrong Aspect Ratio

The 3.5cm × 4.5cm specification is portrait orientation with a 7:9 ratio. Many candidates accidentally crop to a square (1:1) which produces a distorted photo where the face appears squished.

Mistake 4: Photo from Previous Year's Application

SSC explicitly requires the photo to be recent (within 3 months). Reusing a previous year's application photo is a common shortcut that gets caught during document verification for candidates who clear the written exam.

Mistake 5: Editing or Filtering

Candidates sometimes try to improve their photo by adjusting brightness/contrast, applying skin-smoothing filters, or using AI background removal. SSC's verification team is trained to identify digitally altered photos, and these are rejected during DV.

SSC CGL vs CHSL Photo Differences

The photo specifications for SSC CGL and SSC CHSL are identical on the OTR portal — both require the same 20–50KB JPG at 3.5×4.5cm. The difference lies in how strictly they are enforced during document verification:

  • SSC CGL: Higher scrutiny during DV given the higher post categories and government department placements
  • SSC CHSL: Similar scrutiny but at a slightly higher volume of candidates, so automated rejection at the portal catches most issues

For both exams, getting the photo right at the OTR stage is the safest approach.

Step-by-Step: Upload Your SSC Photo Correctly

  1. Take a fresh passport-size photo against a white background (within 3 months)
  2. If you have a physical print, scan it at 200 DPI and save as JPG
  3. If the file is PNG, convert to JPG first using our PNG to JPG converter
  4. Check the file size — if above 50KB, use our SSC Photo Formatter to compress to ~45KB
  5. Verify dimensions — should be approximately 200×260 pixels (portrait)
  6. Upload to the OTR portal and check the preview to ensure the image renders correctly

What to Do If Your Photo is Rejected Post-Application

If you have already submitted your application and your photo gets flagged during the scrutiny phase (typically 1–2 weeks after application closure), SSC may send a correction notification via email/SMS. In this case:

  1. Immediately re-take the photo following correct specifications
  2. Log in to the OTR portal and look for a "Photo Correction" or "Document Upload" option
  3. Upload the corrected photo within the given window (typically 5–7 days)
  4. Take a screenshot as proof of submission

Missing the correction window typically results in application cancellation with no refund of the examination fee.
