NEET 2026 Photo Upload Errors: The 7 Most Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

S
By Sahil Gawade

Every year, thousands of NEET aspirants face a preventable problem: their application form gets flagged for incorrect photo or signature specifications. The National Testing Agency (NTA) has strict automated validation on the NEET registration portal, and photos that fall outside the accepted range are rejected immediately — often with minimal explanation.

This guide covers every photo and signature specification for NEET 2026, along with the seven most common upload errors that cause rejections.

NEET Photo Formatter

Format your NEET photo to exact NTA specifications — 10KB to 200KB, proper dimensions, JPG format. 100% free and processed locally in your browser.

The 7 Most Common NEET Photo Errors

Error 1: Using a PNG Instead of JPG

This is the single most common error. Many students have photos in PNG format (exported from a computer or taken from a website). The NEET portal will display a clear "invalid format" error — but many candidates miss this and keep trying to upload the same file.

Fix: Convert your PNG to JPG before uploading. Use our PNG to JPG converter — it takes less than five seconds.

Error 2: Photo Under 10KB

Unlike most portals that only have an upper size limit, NEET has a lower limit of 10KB as well. If you use an aggressive compression tool without a minimum, you may end up with a 7KB photo that is also rejected.

Fix: Use a tool that targets a specific size window (e.g., 100–150KB) rather than compressing as small as possible.

Error 3: Photo Over 200KB

Conversely, a raw smartphone photo of 2–5MB will exceed the 200KB upper limit and be rejected. This is more obvious but still trips up many first-time applicants.

Fix: Use our 50KB compressor or 100KB compressor to reduce the file to a safe size.

Error 4: Incorrect Dimensions / Aspect Ratio

The NEET photo must be in portrait orientation (taller than wide) with a 3.5:4.5 aspect ratio (approximately 7:9). Submitting a square photo or a landscape-orientation photo will fail validation.

Fix: Crop your photo to the correct aspect ratio before compressing. The standard passport photo crop (3.5cm × 4.5cm) is what you need.

Error 5: Non-White Background

NEET requires a plain white or very light-coloured background. Photos taken outdoors, in front of coloured walls, or with visible furniture in the background may pass the automated upload check but fail during manual verification.

Fix: Take the photo against a white wall in good indoor light, or use a studio.

Error 6: Signature Uploaded in Wrong Orientation

Signatures must be written on a plain white sheet of paper and scanned/photographed in landscape orientation (wider than tall). Many students accidentally scan in portrait mode, resulting in a tall narrow signature that fails the dimension check.

Fix: When scanning your signature, set the scan orientation to landscape (horizontal). The final image should be wider than it is tall.

Error 7: Photo Missing Name and Date

Like UPSC, NTA requires that your name and the date the photo was taken be clearly printed at the bottom of the photograph. This is typically checked during document verification but can also cause issues at exam centre entry.

Fix: Write your name and the photo date on a slip of paper and hold it at the bottom of the frame when photographed, or add it as a text annotation in a basic editor.

When to Take Your NEET Photo

The photograph must be recent — typically taken within the 3 months preceding the registration date. Using an old school ID photo or passport photo from two years ago is risky. NTA's scrutiny team may flag the discrepancy if the photo doesn't match your appearance.

NTA also explicitly states that studio-modified photos — particularly those with digital smoothing, skin whitening, or background removal by AI tools — are not acceptable. Use unedited photos from a simple smartphone or DSLR.

Step-by-Step: Correct NEET Photo Upload Process

  1. Take a fresh photo against a white wall with good lighting (not a selfie, use a friend or tripod)
  2. Ensure your name and date are visible at the bottom
  3. Transfer the photo to your computer
  4. If it is PNG, convert to JPG first
  5. Check the dimensions are portrait (3.5:4.5 ratio) — crop if necessary
  6. Compress to within 10–200KB using our NEET photo formatter
  7. Verify by right-clicking the file → Properties → checking size is between 10KB and 200KB
  8. Upload to the NTA portal

A common tip: do a test upload with a draft/preview application before submitting to verify the photo passes the portal's validation before the deadline.
