IBPS PO 2026 Photo Specifications: Complete Upload Guide for All Documents

S
By Sahil Gawade

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) administers one of the most competitive recruitment processes in India. Thousands of candidates who prepare rigorously for the written examination have their applications flagged or rejected at the document upload stage — not because of their qualifications, but because of photo and document formatting errors.

The IBPS online registration portal has strict validation that checks file size, format, and dimensions for every uploaded document. This guide covers the complete upload specifications for IBPS PO and IBPS Clerk 2026 applications.

Why the 20KB Photo Limit is the Most Common Problem

IBPS has one of the most restrictive photo size limits in Indian government examinations — 20KB. This is the same limit as the IBPS Bank Clerical exam and is roughly half the size of most other government exam portals.

At 20KB, a 200×230 pixel JPEG will have a quality level somewhere between 35–55%. This means:

  • A well-lit photo with a simple white background will look acceptable at 20KB
  • A photo with a complex background, poor lighting, or low resolution will look heavily compressed at 20KB

The key to getting a good-looking 20KB photo is starting with a high-quality source image. A photo taken with a modern smartphone in good light against a white wall will compress to 20KB while remaining recognisable. A blurry selfie taken in dim light will look terrible at any compression.

Preparing Your Left Thumb Impression

The thumb impression upload is a requirement unique to bank exam portals. Here is how to do it correctly:

  1. Get a standard stamp pad (blue or black ink is fine)
  2. Press your left thumb firmly onto the pad to coat it evenly
  3. Press your thumb onto a plain white sheet of A4 paper
  4. Allow it to dry completely before scanning
  5. Scan at 200 DPI and crop tightly around the impression
  6. Save as JPG and compress to under 20KB

Common mistakes:

  • Too much ink (impression smears) — practice 5–10 times before your final impression
  • Too little ink (impression is faint and invisible at 20KB compression) — press firmly
  • Scanning at 72 DPI (produces low-resolution blurry impression) — use 150–200 DPI
  • Background not white — use a fresh white sheet of paper, not a lined or grid sheet

IBPS PO vs IBPS Clerk Differences

The photo and document specifications are identical for IBPS PO, IBPS Clerk, IBPS RRB PO, and IBPS RRB Office Assistant. The only difference is that IBPS Clerk does not require the handwriting sample.

All other specifications — 20KB photo, 10–20KB signature, 20KB thumb impression — apply universally across all IBPS examinations.

What Happens If Your Photo Is Rejected?

IBPS provides a very short correction window (typically 5–7 days after the application period closes) for candidates who receive a rejection notice. During this window:

  1. Log in to your IBPS registration account
  2. Navigate to "Edit Application" or "Correction Window"
  3. Re-upload the corrected documents
  4. Download and save the updated form as proof

Missing the correction window results in a permanently rejected application with no fee refund.

Checklist Before Submitting Your IBPS Application

  • Photo is JPEG format (not PNG, WebP, or any other format)
  • Photo is exactly under 20KB (not 20.1KB — the portal checks precisely)
  • Photo dimensions are 200×230 pixels (use our formatter)
  • Signature is on white paper with black ballpoint pen, under 20KB
  • Thumb impression is on white paper, dried completely before scanning, under 20KB
  • Handwriting sample (PO only) is in black ink, block letters, under 50KB
  • All files are saved as JPG and verified with your file manager before upload
