The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is conducted jointly by the IITs and IISc, and the application portal (GOAPS — GATE Online Application Processing System) has specific photo and signature requirements that differ slightly from other competitive exam portals.
With GATE 2026 applications typically opening between August and October, this is the right time to understand what specifications you need to meet to avoid a stressful last-minute scramble.
Compress Photo to 100KB
GATE requires a photo between 5KB and 100KB. Hit the sweet spot of 80KB for maximum quality within the allowed range.

GATE Photo Tips: What Makes GATE Unique
The 100KB Upper Limit
GATE's 100KB upper limit is more generous than UPSC (300KB actually, but 50KB typical targets) or IBPS (20KB). This means you have more flexibility with quality. A high-quality 80KB photo at 240×320 pixels will look excellent — significantly better than the heavily compressed photos required for IBPS.
Recommended target: 80KB — gives you maximum quality while staying safely under the 100KB ceiling.
Light-Coloured Background (Not Strictly White)
Unlike US visa or UPSC (which require pure white), GATE specifies "plain white or light-coloured" background. A very light grey or cream background is acceptable. However, a plain white background is still the safest choice.
No Glasses Policy
GATE 2026 follows the increasingly standard no-glasses rule for biometric photos. Remove prescription glasses, sunglasses, and fashion eyewear before taking your photo.
Common GATE Application Photo Mistakes
- Using the same photo from last year's GATE application — technically flagged if the photo is over 6 months old; retake if it was taken before this year's window opened
- Uploading a selfie — selfies taken with the front camera of a phone typically have perspective distortion (wide-angle lens effect) that makes the face appear larger or the background appear angled. Use a friend or tripod at eye level
- Photo with phone case or mirror visible — ensure the background is clear and unobstructed
- Signature too large — a signature that fills the entire crop area may get cut off in the admit card. The signature should be centred on the white paper with some margin on all sides
Signature Resizer for Exams
Resize and compress your GATE signature to 2–30KB JPEG. Automatic dimension adjustment for the GOAPS portal upload.
GATE Paper-Specific Photo Requirements
There is no variation in photo requirements between GATE papers (CS, ECE, ME, CE, etc.). All candidates — regardless of discipline — upload photos and signatures through the same GOAPS portal with identical specifications.
However, there is a variation by session if you are applying to multiple papers: GATE allows candidates to apply for up to two papers in some combinations. When applying for two papers, you upload a single photograph that appears on both admit cards.
Checking Your Photo Before Upload
Before uploading to GOAPS, verify:
- Right-click the file → Properties → check the file size is between 5KB and 100KB
- Open the image in any photo viewer and verify the dimensions are portrait (taller than wide)
- Check that the background is white/light and there are no shadows
- Zoom in on the face — the eyes should be clearly visible and the image should be in focus
If you need to adjust the file size, use our photo compression tool to bring it within the 5–100KB window.
The GATE Admit Card and Photo Importance
Your GATE photo appears on:
- The digital admit card (downloaded from GOAPS)
- The scorecard (if you qualify)
- The admit letters for IIT/IISc admissions and PSU interviews
At exam centres, invigilators compare your admit card photo to your physical appearance. A photo that is clearly old (dated appearance), taken at an angle, or of poor quality can cause verification delays even if it passed the portal's automated checks.
Take a fresh, high-quality photo when the application window opens. It is worth the five minutes.
